A Report on the DNN Conference

Previously DotNetNuke sessions were featured for one day during the larger Dev Connections event. Single "Day of DotNetNuke" events were organized a few times as well, like Day of DotNetNuke Chicago that Sprocket helped launch in October 2010. But this DNN World Conference offered multiple days which were all focused solely on DNN and drew a nice-sized crowd from all over the world.

Part of the fun was having face-time with designers and developers whom Sprocket has worked with after "meeting" them online at Snowcovered or other venues. Jim commented that they also ran into a number of people who had attended the Day of DotNetNuke Chicago. "It was great to see familiar faces and catch up with them again."

Don and Jim split up to attend as many sessions as possible while in Florida and bring back new techniques. Jim's favorite session was Maximize your DNN Installation for Performance with Ernst Peter Tamminga.

"I think I picked up eight or nine things we could do for our clients' sites to make them perform better. Even the smaller sites that aren't spending a lot of time managing their content and don't get much traffic can benefit from some of these tips," Jim said.

Don liked the "CMS Redefined" theme which emphasized how the DNN Content Management System has evolved to embrace Cloud, Mobile and Social Media features.

"Beyond the catchy tagline," Don said, "is the recognition that social media and mobility are making a huge impact on modern Internet usage. The attention that DNN Corp is giving social and mobile was nicely tied together with others in the community like skin and module developers. I particularly liked seeing how to effectively track social media efforts."

As veterans of many similar conferences, both Don and Jim were very impressed by the conference's venue as well. "I've been to some shoddy conventions," Jim said, "but from the first moment we walked in the whole experience was top-notch. The signage and graphics were clean, crisp, very professional. The food, the refreshments, the After Dark event was great. Kudos to everyone who put DNN World together. They hit a home run."

Jim and Don hope to see another DNN World next year, but right now they are concentrating on making use of the knowledge they brought back to the office. They are also following up on the many contacts they made during the week to initiate collaboration on some new projects.
