You're involved in running your business and don't have time to spend worrying about how to make your website look good on mobile devices. We get that. But there are some basics that deserve your attention.
Desktop computer screens are getting bigger all the time. Web professionals today design sites for screens that are more than twice as big as those sold ten years ago. On the flip side, there are lap top screens, tablet screens, half-size tablet screens and a wide variety of smart phone screens.
You can see why designing a website to look good on all those different screens is quite a challenge!
Some folks decide not to take the challenge and they’re missing out when it comes to creating websites for mobile devices. Earlier this year, Nielsen reported that more than 50% of U.S. consumers use smartphones. Since that includes your customers, having a mobile-friendly site should be a priority.
There are lots of details and nuances, but for starters there are three main questions to consider when creating a mobile-friendly presence.
Downloadable App or Mobile Website?
An advantage of a downloadable app is that static information is readily available to the user even when they don’t have a network connection. A disadvantage is that when you update your information, they need to download the new version. Also, some folks won’t take the time to download an app. Like when they’re hungry and looking for the closest restaurant.
When designing for a smaller screen you have limited space so you’ll need to decide what information is most important to your mobile device user. Users scroll up and down so you can make a longish page, but prioritizing is crucial to get the most needed content at the top.
How About the Rest?
For the user really who wants to dig into your content, you can always redirect them to your standard website. While the viewing may not be optimal, you should still provide access to a highly motivated user.
Before you throw money into whipping up a quick mobile solution, think about these questions and come up with a plan. Sit down with your website designer and talk it through so you get a site that’s a positive experience for your client and a positive reflection on you.
